Westlake Porter Public Library

Bernice Yates Reading Garden

We worked closely with the architect and the library board to design this outdoor reading garden to extend the library experience outdoors.  A new wall and fence was constructed to create an enclosed, secure area with many seating areas to give visitors different experiences with meandering paths connecting the various intimate spaces.  Features include seating areas with a paver patio with umbrella tables and a seat wall, a wall fountain and an overhead trellis tucked into one of the corners of the garden, which provides a quiet setting.  Another small seating area under a trellis outside the Children’s Reading area overlooks a small pond and fountain sculpture.  A third seating area is located along the back wall, allowing views to the entire garden, and is shaded by an overhead trellis.
